Post 3Wheeler won't start, relay clicking very loudly. Reply with quote
Hey guys, been awhile, my problem is that I can't get my 3Wheeler to start. It maybe will start for one turnover but won't stay started. have charged the battery, but all I get is a very loud clicking from the starter motor relay and from what I'm reading in the manual and as much as I can comprehend what it's telling me to do, I'm hoping it'd just the relay and not the starter motor, so if anyone can help me out here as to how/what to check to narrow down the problem I would be grateful for the assistance.
Thank you,
Sean

Most often its the battery, as they wear out they still show 12 volts but don't have the amps to run the starter motor so the relay just clicks. Take it to parts store for a checkout.

Check out all wire connections from battery to start motor.

Remove starter and bench test with starter cables.

If the relay can be opened, do so. It is like a set of points and can be so corroded inside where they connect that it clicks but cannot send juice into the starter.

Hey rufusswan Thanks for the reply and I'll check it out, I wondered about the battery too since everytime I charged to full voltage, when I would put it back on I could only get it to almost start, once it did start but petered out right away, so I don't think it's the starter motor but will check that too-when I would go to recharge the battery the display showed it totally right back down as if I'd left it on all night with everything on and awhile ago when I didn't ride it for a long time, the charger showed that the battery was in a de sulfated state and it would try to charge it a certain way to see if that would bring it back up to snuff and it did. Regarding the relay switch, are you referring to the black plastic cap that fits over the switch and its terminals that the wires connect to ? Cause when I was trying to narrow this down the terminals were just covered with green and I cleaned them and got them back to totally shine brass. It has juice from Battery to the terminals and like I said just went down and tried it, press start button and can hear start motor trying to work then nothing but that relay clicking each time I push button. In the repair manual it says to use #6 size wire from battery to terminal on starter motor itself taking off the wire from relay of course just to see if it will start-does it have to be #6 wire,? obviously has to be not small gauge wire I know. And last but not least what kind of battery should I replace it with if that's the problem, does it still have to be a lead acid one ?
Thank you for your help rufusswan

Hey rufusswan, sorry I tend to blab a lot, as of now the relay switch just one continuous buzz and will take batt with me tomorrow, replacement batts do not come with the round connects anymore, all are L shaped, so will have to redo for the cables. I tried to use charged batt to test SM but since batt is no good no point, it tried to turn over once. So Thank you for the info and just want to know if I need a new relay switch can I find a similar one @ auto store or have to see if someone can get me a new one frm ? India ? I'll try new batt 1st.
Thank you for the help, it's perfect riding weather here and I'm in need of it.
