Post Dead CDI unit ?? Reply with quote
Strange problem. I recently changed the oil and plug, then gave the bike a bath.
It ran great before the oil change, and immediately after it's bath. I then drove the bike around the block, parked it for 2 hours. Now it won't start.
The starter cranks the motor, good spark, gas, great compression. Will sometimes backfire when I try to start it.
Cleaned and dried all the electrical connections. Water got everywhere when I hosed the bike down.
I'm thinking I killed MY CDI unit.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated

It's possible, I suppose, except the CDI is a hermetically sealed unit, so some stray water should not harm it at all.

Did you actually remove the sparkplug to test for fire? If not, you could have filled the area outside the plug with water, at which point the plug will short out before it fires. That happens on my R75 if it's parked in the rain.

You can test the CDI, but I'd also check the plug cap/wire and coil while you give it some more time to dry.

Yes I did test the spark plug by removing it cranking the motor while grounding it against the motor . Bright strong spark.
This happened yesterday, it' been sitting in 90+ temp. It should be dry.
I'll recheck the coil.
If the CDI is bad, do you have any recommendation for replacement.
I've been searching on the web, there not that easy to find.
I checked my local place and Sooterwest, no luck.
Thank your for your reply

I can't help finding a stock CDI, but you can find others with a 5 pin connector on Ebay. They are not exactly 16 degree advance but they work OK.

But, if you watched the plug spark that says the issue may not be the CDI. That sounds like something else could be wrong. I admit that 'backfire-ing' us usually a timing issue, but ....

I might be wary and replace the cap and high tension lead, or is there any chance at all that you did not flood the carb somehow with water?

Thanks Rufusswan
I'll see if my local Scooter shop has those parts.
I checked the carb, no water.

I think the guy I talked to at Columbia Scooters mentioned he had a bajaj CDI in stock. Try there.

Installed new Coil and wire today, Still not starting.
If I hold the start button down and keep it down, it may backfire once or fire normally only once.
Other wise it just cranks over, like when you forget to turn the run/stop switch to run.
Thanks Threegoofs, I'll contact Columbia scooters.
I'm quickly running out of stuff to replace. Hope the CDI works

OK, were back in the saddle again.
The CDI unit was dead.
I was not able to locate a Bajaj CDI for the Legend. Instead I purchase a "4 stroke Racing CDI" from scooterparts4less.com
Works great!
Thanks everyone for your help

Post Wiring of the 4-stroke High Performance CDI Reply with quote
Hello -- this thread is quite old so don't know if anybody is watching it. Anyone know how to wire the aftermarket CDI mentioned in this thread to the stock Legend (2002 model)? It's not a plug and play install as far as I can tell. Thanks.

Just buy the proper number of pins for the CDI connector and it will be plug&play. There is also a manual for pin out and test procedures elsewhere on this board.

You might also have gotten water inside the air breather or the carb itself and it ain't gonna want to run at all.
