Post HELP ME DECIDE! To buy or not to buy... 2002 yellow Chetak Reply with quote
OK, a local Gentleman has his Chetak up for sale, and I checked it out- and really liked what I saw... except for the color. Yellow. The color of lemon yogurt.

Here's the details on the scoot...

2002 Bajaj Chetak Yellow

PROS
* Bought locally from a Bajaj dealer and maintained by the dealer.
* Windshield & Rear Rack and helmets
* For sale like 15 minutes from where I live
* Great service history- doesn't seem to have any glitches or problems
* New battery
* Fairly low mileage (less than 2k)

CONS
* Laid down once- damage seemed minor to my untrained eye- one scuffed & touched up cowl, and some scraping to the leg-guard. All pretty minor, and could pass for wear-and-tear.
* Yellow... if it were red or silver, then no contest... but yellow...
* Might not be the right time for me to get a scooter yet (still live 18 miles from work)

PRICE
Just reduced to $1900

HELP ME BAJA-WAN, YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE!

Here is what I would do:

Buy the freaking Chetak. Sounds perfect.

There is a whole series of posts on rattle-can painting: a how-to, if you will.

Buy it with the intent to make it your own. To me, this is not even a decision to ponder.

But then again, I am an addict.

Called the guy and BOUGHT IT.

I will take possession on Thursday.

I fully intend to take a long luxurious honemoon with this machine, ride it aruond the yard until I'm aces on the shifter, and perhaps do some painting and custom work on it in the meantime... add some graphics.. paint a cowl... generally make it my own.

Holly Effing Crap.

I own a scooter.

I say buy, low miles, well maintained, 19 miles is not to far to ride to woork. And best of all you can repaint it any color you want.
I have a 2002 and am very happy with it.

Good deal, congrats! That new-scooter feeling won't really go away, btw. Smile. Have fun, I know you will.

Too late now ... there's no turning back ... You're one of Us! Shocked

Co-workers will notice that you seem to be taking longer-than-normal lunches...
Pictures of scooters and miscellaneous scooter trinkets will accumulate on your desk...
You'll find yourself staring at your scooter at 3am...
You may notice people saying strange things to you like; "B-, are you listening?"...

I love the smell of petroleum in the morning.

All of that happened to me too. Smile

It comes home tonight!

I'm going to take it for a gentle turn on the grass, and not do much more than that until I can block some time with my scootering friend to come show me the ropes.

Lets see...

1) Fuel on

2) In neutral

3) hit starter or kick

4) sit for a moment, enjoying the sound of the idle

5) Ease it off the stand, balancing with me feet.

6) Squeeze clutch

7) Click into first

8) eaaaaaaaaaaasy off the clutch until the engine engages

9) ride as fast as the idle (or a tweak of the throttle) will take me

10) Don't fall over.

Final tip - if you panic or need to stop feel free to grab the clutch, but don't grab the brake - slowly and gently squeeze (actually, use your foot brake first). I've never locked up the front tire, but I'm sure it's been done when panicking. Like with a bicycle, locking up the back brake is fine (your foot brake), but be a bit careful with the front.

Oh, and congratulations! I too have a 2002 yellow Chetak. This weekend I'm dressing up the sides with hornet decals - to make the yellow look intentional. Another idea would be a taxi checkerboard.

Taxis! Yeah, I've been racking my brain for cool things that are yellow... classic yellow cabs...

I was pretty much stuck with bananas and monkeys.

If I go black and yellow, I'll get lynched here in Athens... home of the Bulldogs, rivals to the GA-Tech yellowjackets.

You could go with a sunset theme - red and yellow. Plus taxi checkers could be all kinds of colors - I've certainly seen green checkers on taxis.

A little more orange than the ghee colored chetak.

But I've heard that you can buy the checker trim from the cab company.

She came home with me last night!

Haven't cranked her up yet (I'm going to try and get some video of my first ride), but looking forward to getting off work this afternoon, oh yes I am.

Right now, I'm leaning towards a funky Day of the Dead theme with flowers and sugar skulls. If I could get something like this image in a custom graphic...

Not exactly what you wanted but check out these scooter graphics. You might have seen these in the latest 'Scoot". (you gotta scroll down the page to see the images)
http://www.pimpmyscoota.com There's a dozen or so featured artists with some really cool graphic work. Maybe you could be next...

Yeah, DON'T!!
Can't believe people are selling their scooters.
That's like a man getting rid of his tools.
Or his fishing equipment.
It just doesn't happen...
