Looks pretty good!
The first thing I was going to say was "holy crap that's gonna be heavy!" But then I saw the holes you made. Very smart.

It is actually still kinda heavy. that is our biggest concern. We are covering it with Fiberglass right now. This is one of the reasons I want to mount it to the tire carrier instead of the rack - to eliminate the rack weight. I sure hope it can handle it...

you could use a router and rout out some of the mdf too to lighten it up. do it in the places that dont need much strength...

Ice chest as a trunk |
|
Hi,
I wanted to do the same thing as you, but ended up instead buying an ice chest at a yard sale for $1.00, then two cans of black Krylon Fusion spray paint (for plastics). Cleaned the ice chest real good and painted it. Then bought a chrome locking latch for $9.00 and some mounting hardware. I have a twist screw release on the inside to disengage the front of the ice chest from the spare tire rack. This allows me to swivel the ice chest rearward to let me access the spare tire without having to comletely remove the ice chest. It matches the color of my bike, is weather proof, big and works great. Total cost about $20.00
I'll send you some pics if you're interested, or just go to the Bajaj Forum, and look for "Chetak on a carrier" in the photos section.

The problem with milk crates is that most are made from polyethylene, and are darn near impossible to get paint to stick to.

Foam Instead of MDF |
|
I've built car body sections out of polyurethane foam and fiberglass which might help with your weight problem, plus it has the benefit of being extremely strong when fully glassed. If you google R.Q. Riley and go to his site, there is a free document for downloading on building cars and three wheelers using the foam/glass method.

I bet that is gonna hold a whole lot! That thing is a Caddilac of a top box. I bet it will look sharp when you paint it.

Well...I routered out most of the MDF board and applied some more fiberglass for support.....
I have a big question now - the thing is SOO big - it blocks the rear turn signals and...break light!!
SO I have to install some on the box - should be pretty easy...But I need to know where I can find some coolish turn signal lights...
Anyone know where I can get some stylish lights??? - looking for PX style

Don't know about the lights, but you might want to look into a wheelie bar!

i can't help but think that this would look better if you had a single seat and moved it forward.
you could even add a back pad.
the lights are a sensible touch.

This is a safety consideration too. When I rode up to the Redneck Scoot-a-Que and met Matty/et al I was just minimally packed for overnight camping and had no trouble pulling wheelies. Most all the scoots weight is on the back tire, and any box puts additional weight behind the rear axle and makes the issue worse.

I did have an issue with wheelies when I origionally had the box mounted on the rear rack. When I mounted it directy to the spare rack mount it brought the box closer the the front and elimiated most of the problem. I really need to watch it depending on the loadout. I have learned to ride on the front of the seat when it is loaded up which makes a big handleing differance. But so far thing have felt pretty good, and I have not said "oh ya, i rode my scoot to the store.... I wont be able to carry these two gallons of milk home" while shopping at the store.

A box is super handy indeed. I sold my rack so I'll be redoing my old box to mount directly on the mount, right behind the tire.

So are you going to make front storage area/box as well? Bring the weight forward and clean up the aerodynamics a little?
Did you remember to put a couple of drainholes in the bottom (broken beer bottles cause a big mess)?
It is a sweet looking box. Great job.
