Howdy Y'all,

Just rolled a thousand on the speedo of "Ye Noble Steed." I love that damn Chetak. Thought I'd celebrate with my first post on this new forum.

I'm in the 11,000 mile club. Can I join? Smile

Congrats though. It's cool to hit these different mileage milestones. 1000, 3000, 5000, 10,000....

Only had it a few weeks and so busy with school I have little time to go on long rides. I can't wait till I get to open it up, I am still following the break in regulation to the "T". Does anyone else have a ghost in their electric start Question Question Question

I'm a member of the 1000 and the 5000 club. I need to make it to the 25000 club to feel that owning the scooter makes financial sense. At 5,000 miles I'm probably at about 90 cents per each of those miles when you take into account purchase, registration, inspections, maintenance and insurance for almost 2 years.

15,000 mile club and riding daily all 4 seasons. these things are built like tanks!!! Ive riden so much my seat is starting to come apart. Do most of my maintenance myself so other than the purchase cost I have very little into it. still runs great.

I thought there might be a few of you out there. So far its been over a thousand trouble free miles along with a free oil change provided by my dealer. Anything I should be on the look out for at this point?

1. Watch for rust. My crash bars are rusting where they jam into the center thingy. Mine spends a lot of time out in the weather.

2. Cable adjustments. If you slowly have more and more trouble getting it into 1st at traffic lights, you'll need to adjust your shifter cable pair. I've had to adjust mine 3 times in 5000 miles.

3. Check your oil occasionally. Some do use some oil. Mine doesn't use much, but I do have to add a few tablespoons between changes.

4. Check your battery electrolyte level whenever you may have that cowl off. They do run dry in the summer, and need distilled water when cells get low. If you have the white translucent battery, still, you can see the level through the case itself. Mine ran dry, leading to a dead battery. Adding water cured it for the past 1500 miles.

5. REAR AXLE HUB NUT. Occasionally lift the rear off the ground while on the center stand and see if there is any side-to-side play in the rear wheel. If so, tighten your hub nut pronto before the wheel splines wear out the shaft splines or vice verse. I caught mine in time. It had worked finger loose. I believe my rear tire wore out much faster than it would have as a result.

6. Brake lights....check them frequently. I rode mine for over a month with my brake light on constantly due to a switch assy popping loose at the right hand brake lever. That was, of course, a real safety issue.

Just broke 1000 on the way home from a tune-up. Of course it's my wife's scooter that she rode to work for two years, so I can only claim about 1/2 the miles. Wink

IMHO - change your oil again.

The first few changes are the critical ones. Metal shavings are far more prevalent early-on in the life on an engine. I found as much metal in my 1000 mile oil change as I did in my 300 mile change.

Best,
John

Thats no joke. The oil was much dirtier also than at 300. I plan to change again at 1500 just to be on the safe side. Oil is cheap compared to a jacked up camshaft, crank, or cyl. Wink

5011.

Just a head's up if you image google (two nouns used as one verb, you figure it out) "vespa" and "cake," in an attempt to get an image of a cake made with the image of a scooter on it, one finds a dreamy photo of Mr. Daniel Craig. Mr. Craig is no where near a scooter in this photo, nor is there a scooter anywhere on that page. Go figure. Gift horse, all that.

Regadless. I passed the 5,000 mark today on my trusty steed.

Not a scooter on a cake.

I just turned 7,000 on the 2003. I use it a great deal in the shopping mode and general utility carrier because of the single seat and rear platform to bungee things down. Actually there is an old speedo, odo unit around with about 1,300 miles on it... Had to be replaced as it was not at all consistent. So the actual miles are a bit more. The 2002 has 16000 and isn't getting to many miles just now, as I need to get the fancy seat re- stitched. Yes my second vehicle is a Chetak too. The sweet little MR-2 (Toyota) hasn't been started since I went to El Paso (270 miles) last month. I think it's lonely and jealous... Seems I always need tires tho... "If I'm lyin I'm flyn" Alas not any more R

After finally replacing a broken speedometer cable, I'm finally seeing the odometer move again. I probably have about 6500 real miles, although it says 5832.

That was a tougher chore than I thought it would be, but at least I have the "I did it myself" satisfaction.

I ride my scooter daily to work... but that's only a 1.2 miles round-trip! Rolling Eyes I'll pass 1,000 miles tomorrow thanks to long Group rides and, of course, the 492 mile beer-run a couple of weeks ago! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Including the beer run (450 miles from KC to Columbia), Beer run practice (150miles), a ride up to Weston Mo (100 miles), and my work commute (250miles), I put on almost 1000 miles in a week and a half! Oh what a glorious week and a half it was Wink
