Three Wheeled 'Scoots' |
|
I see these type 'scooter' oriented vehicles being promoted more and more often. This website seems typical of the new-and-coming genre of vehicles. I wonder what some of your thoughts are ......

I think that you'll see these guys a lot in the resort and retirement communities in the southern states (ie. Florida and Arizona) especially at the beach rental places. People will want to drive one for an afternoon because it looks unique and fun and they are on vacation so why not. When it comes to seeing these being bought and used by the average consumer I wouldn't count on it. Although it looks fun, I am betting it can only top out around 50 MPH with the 150cc and so a regular scooter would be a better deal. As for it replacing cars on the roads because of its fuel efficiency it appears from the picture that it would have all the same issues as a scooter when it comes to bad weather (no top!!!). It does have some storage space but at $6,000 most people will opt for a nice used car.
Long story short: A) not as fun as a scooter once the initial "geewhiz" phase is over. B) not near as practical as a car when looking at everything other than fuel efficiency.
I have seen more powerful ones made with crotch rocket engines but those seem more like toys for the wealthy than anything else and even they appear to be loosing interest in them.

...i got to test ride a couple of these Bajaj 3wheelers. the first was the "truck" version with a cab. i got around the block before my back cramped up and my eyes started watering from the pain... the cab is so small that an "average' American male would not be able to ride comfortably(and i'm larger than average). the other one was the "rickshaw" version. this was better. with the top off and a couple of friends in the back... but, on both of them, the top speed was 40mph. and gross hauling weight is insufficient for any real purpose. a scooter club turning one into a rolling bar would be the ideal purpose for one of these...
...cushman makes a great 3wheel truckster that is used on golf courses. i've used them a ton over the years and they have a two cylinder 300cc motor. most have governors to keep them below 45mph. you also see allot of them being used by "meter maids".

I'd rather start with this $600 Cushman from Craigslist. 4 wheels, probably 18 Hp motor, steering wheel, doors would be easy to make, heat it in winter, etc.
The reason for asking my question, is that the Chinese have gotta sell us something, and seem hell bent on selling clone scooter/vehicles. They may be a bit pricey at $6K above, but soon they will be used vehicles, much cheaper, and as easy to take care of as our Bajaj scooters.
These 3-wheel 'tadpole' type vehicles might not be as much fun as a real scooter, but will become cheap, fun, even exciting to bomb around in, have parking lot races, get out in the snow. I'm looking forward to good things

If I was to buy a three wheeler, it would most definitely be a Bajaj and not a Chinese POS. Just the fact that they are so widely used and common in India is a true testament to their function and their dependability. Of course, they're not the most practical vehicle for most Americans in this wide open land of ours, but neither is a scooter. I think an autorickshaw, truck or a Bajaj van would be great fun. I'd try to see how many clowns I could fit inside of it during the Dirty Clown Run, or take my dog on a little ride around town
I mean, come on guys, we don't ride scooters for their speed.
