What are you listening to right now?

This is a thread on a lot of the hi-fi forums I check out sometimes.

It can be fun to find out what other people are listening to while they doodle their computers.

Sometimes it turns you on to new music, sometimes it makes you pull something off the shelf you haven't listened to in awhile.

I am listening to the first side of Exclamation Maggot Brain by Funkadelic Exclamation It's ben a long time and I forgot how great it was.

Pretty hip stuff, depending on the definition of 'hip' Smile

Basic 5 piece jazz combo with Jamie doing some great singing. From "Wind Cries Mary" to "Singing in the Rain". Also has "Blame it on my Youth" an absolutely incredible ballard. Several other popular tunes from the Great American Songbook done in his marvelous style. I think the album is entitled "Twentysomething".

That is a great jazz album; it's by an English guy by the name of Jamie Cullum. Try the song "All at Sea" if you want to hear a great one...

Just woke up from a late night. Right now I'm listening to The Gaslight Anthem, sort of a bluesy punk band. Anyone here use last.fm?

I have never gotten into Morrissey Matty, would this album be a good start?

Right now I am listening to the sound track of "THE SOPRANOS".

My two favorite Morrissey records are "Vauxhall and I" and "Your Arsenal."

The "Ringleaders of the Tormentors" album is his most recent and arguably best album from the last ~10 years. But the above two are his all-time best in my opinion*

*not counting his work with The Smiths.

I am always up for some good Jazz I haven't heard yet. So I guess the thread says Cullum gets a thumbs up from gboss and a thumbs up from Rufus. I got another record to hunt out now. Can't wait to get my scooter on the road where as I can afford to ride to the record stores!

It's decent stuff. He's a darn good singer, the arrangements are super, and all of them appeal to me as a drummer. My copy has been ripped, so I don't know who did the arranging. And yea, my opinion of gboss when up high when I read his post. He has some taste.

Speaking of English performers..... This person is not English, she's from the USA. Cut a couple of very minor records, hardly anyone here nows of her. She died very young but was popularized by the English public. Died at a very young age. Has a voice like an angel, and does her own guitar work and A/R. Is the only person other than Judy Garland that has done justice to "Over the Rainbow". oogle Eva Cassidy

Post Lou Rawls! Reply with quote
I am listening to an album by Lou rawls I bought today in a record shop about 50 miles from home. It was the first long trip I took on the new engine. I have a little over 600 miles on it now.

Anyway, Me and some buddies have had this weird obsession with Lou Rawls for a few years, and I picked up this record today for three bucks. It has a kick ass cover with Lou wearing a totally bad ass black leather suit with a mike in his hand. And the music is superb. Has some crazy cover songs on it. Lou does a remake of Donovan's "season of the Witch" and riffs at the end with some wild lounge style add lib! It has some of the funkiest Lou I have ever heard. The band on here is super tight asn the sound is crisp and poppin'. And of course it also has some superb ballads.

If you ever get the chance, sit down and listen to Lou Rawl's - "The way it was - The way it is", you might not be able to sit for too long though, you might have to get up and do the popcorn!

Funny how summer brings out certain albums. Wilco's Sky Blue SKy will always be summer listening for me. The Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique is back in the car for the sun drenched months. Newer stuff I'm spinning: Vampire Weekend will almost certainly be a summer CD for a couple of years, Throw me the Statue has been a find for me, and Flight of the Conchords has me giggling like a school girl.

Love the jazz thread as well (thanks for a few names to check up on). You can never go wrong with Chet Baker and some west coast cool jazz and Wes Montgomery will always blow me away with that guitar work.

I do have to add that "Throw a Kit" has been required listening for me after clicking on a link here in this forum. In case you missed it

Hey Saluki,
I got a best of Wes Montgomery on verve a couple of weeks back. It is a great album to chill out with. He is very good with that jazz guitar. If you get the chance you might check out an album called "White Rabbit" by George Benson. He is usually a little to pedestrian for my taste but this album really cooks. Ron Carter is on bass and Herbie Hancock is on keys, I can't recall who was on the drums at the moment, but I probably have listened to that record at least once every two weeks since I got it a couple of years ago. I believe it is on the CTI label.

I have not heard of Vampire Weekend but I will check it out.

Rob

Paz,

Had a listen to Klugh's greatest hits, good stuff. I dig that smooth jazz guitar, a little country twang even on "I dont want to leave you alone anymore"

Rob,

If you're able to stomach the Beatles again, check out Blue Note Plays The Beatles. Some great versions including Stanley Jordan doing Eleanor Rigby, and Grant Green doing the most incredible 9 minute jazz guitar version of A Day in the Life. Chet Baker, Bud Shank, and Buddy RIch also contribute songs. It's a great CD. Basie also has a fun Beatles CD called Basie's Beatle Bag. Jumpin versions of early Beatle stuff. AND I have a sweet spot in my heart for the cheesy Benson on Breezin. If you can play like that in a ruffled tux shirt, you've got my respect.

Tom Waits Small Change found its way back onto the turntable. Classic lines like
"I'm getting harder than Chinese algebra" crack me up everytime.

The new Beck is is worth your money too, but Beck always is.

Hey Saluki,

I remember BLue Note releasing some tribute albums in the late 90's. I had a sampler CD and I did not like it, too much like what I heard in the dental office. I think Blue Note had JUST changed ownership at the time and was trying to get some disks pumped out to gather attention so that may have lead to the lackluster performances as well. *** But I don't remember ANY Beatles on it so I bet this is a new one. I will check it out!*** And don't get me wronge- I can totally get into the layed back- cool- smooth jazz, as long as the talent is there to back it up. Those tributes back then were missing that talent- therefore- DENTAL OFFICE JAZZ!
Laughing

Tom waits kicks ass. I watched the film "short cuts" a couple of weeks ago. If you have never seen it I would recommend it. Tom is in it. It has Jazz- Drugs- Alcohol- Suicide- Murder- Chamber music- Hughy Lewis- everything a good movie should have!

Right now I am listening to the soundtrack from the movie "Brazil." Go Figure.

Dental Office JaZZ = insipid music whose purpose is to put you to sleep. We called it Elevator Music in my day. Insipid performers doing insipid arrangements of great songs generally without the words.J

"Jazz- Drugs- Alcohol- Suicide- Murder- Chamber music- Hughy Lewis- everything a good movie should have!" well, to use all them words in the same sentence .... that's just too much to respond to....whew Rolling Eyes

Good call J. Jazzmatazz is awesome.

If you like that stuff, check out some of the other stuff Guru (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru_(rapper)) has done. I dig some Gangstarr and Baldhead Slick.

Most of my recent music habits are directly related to having a 9-year old, playing Guitar Hero with him, trying to play a lot of classic country and rock for him and his little sister Smile Wife and I have been listening to "This American Life" via podcast a lot too.

Matt and Robby -

I've always dug Guru, but I REALLY love jazz / hip hop fusion and "live" hip-hop ala A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and The Roots, and Collective Efforts.

If you like Jazzmatazz, he's up to volume 4 now. I have the first 2, didn't know there was a 3rd or 4th until the other day.

Robby's post in the "55 MPH again???" thread reminded me of an album I haven't heard in forever.

"Double Nickles on the Dime" by the Minutemen

It's spinning now. Good times. Good tunes.

RIP D.

I just got a new cartridge for a new record player I lusted after a long while and finally found a good deal on a used one and bought it last week. I spent this afternoon setting it up and it is sounding sooo sweet! I ordered the needle from this guy in Hong Kong named "Mr. Juki"- he deals in the "grey" market and has really nice deals on high end audio equipment. It was the first time I ordered from him so quite a relief today when I received my package from Hong-Kong speedpost.

Anyway, it is 12:30 friday night and I have been spinning the wax for about the last 5 hours now. I usually end up listening to some common albums when I get a new component and tonight is no exception. I started off with the old "BIG SOUND" stoner rock like Dark Side,Supertramp- Breakfast in America, Dire Straits- Love over Gold, and some steely dan. After I got burned out on that I changed to some more modern stuff and listened to Paul Weller, Counting Crowes, Golden Smog, and the new Levon Helm record "Dirt Farmer".

I just finished listening to Muddy Waters- "folk Singer" and a lightnin' Hopkins record. I think I'll finish of the evening by putting on a new pressing of blue note records Hank Mobley "soul station". It was a gift from my lady this last christmas and if you like Coltrane's "blue train" then I highly recommend checking out this Hank Mobley joint. It'll take you there.
