Nay, my son, I shall not fix the typo. "Wrenching Deficiency" is merely cute, "Wrinching Deficiency" is frickin' hilarious.
Chetakqua comes later. I graduated high school in 1968, your talkin' to one of the original stoners, without us early musicians to sell pot to flip-flop heads, there would have been no hippies. As if there ever were. Read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". Chetakqua: Life on the Road with Rufus and the Buddha.

Read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". |
The book that inspired me to love all things 2 wheeled!
Can't wait for Chetakqua, sounds like the love child of "On the Road" and "Siddhartha". ;)

Plus a little "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", as we can't forget good old Hunter, and a dash of "The Tao of Physics".
But, let's stop hijacking our own thread

You know what they say. Necessity is the Mother of invention. Not a Bodge but pretty close. At least you don't have to worry about getting the tootsie's caught in the spokes.

WHY a BAJAJ? |
|
Cool thread!! In May of 2003 GF was looking at a TNG and I was with her. The same shop had Bajaj I walked in the door it was love at first sight. I bought ol blue on the spot. Five years and 24,800 miles later and still 4-stroken. Most dependable gas freindly ride I have had ever.

Love story: I was in Japan and fell in love with old style Vespas...and when I was headed back to the states I wanted one by the time I got back. So, I popped on ebay and the only scooters for sale that moment were Vietnam re-conditioned ones that I heard nightmares about..and this cute little white '02 Chetak. I emailed this guy from Japan and when I got home to Alaska the crate was waiting for me. When I opened my crate the shipping company accidently sent me a brand new Honda 1200 maroon thing that I would have needed a step ladder to get on. When I called the shipping company they were shocked that I was willing to send back this brand new and very expensive bike to get my little 800 dollar used Chetak. I eventually sold the little white Chetak thinking I would try and again for the classic Vespa and missed the Chetak so much I bought another one from one of our own on this board! I'm sure I'll someday have that dream Vespa...but I'll never give up my Chetak again!

Why I got my Chetak? Well many of the same reasons mentioned here in the thread by other owners. I really wanted a classic Vespa but when I took a look around I soon figured the price tags were to high for me for a decent restored example of a true 60's classic ( SS 180 was my dream) then I came accross the Baja Chetak and did some web surfing which gave me new hope of getting the classic lines at a resonable price, I purchased my 2004 Chetak a couple of months later and I have enjoyed it everytime I've gone on a ride.
Also many thanks to all you guys for posting all of the great tips on this Board.

For me - I'd just wanted a scooter basically since I was around 10. I had a suzuki 80 dirt bike as a kid, 4T, and had ridden dirt bikes and a few motorcycles, but I always dug the style of a scooter.
I wanted manual shift. I wanted a P series Vespa, but I couldn't find one. The ones I could find, I couldn't afford.
Then I saw a Bajaj ad in a magazine and went to their website. Saw the dealer list (and this is before we had the awesome ScooterWorld in Kansas City) and St. Louis was the closest dealer. I continued to shop for about a month when I had decided on a Bajaj and was ready to make the trip to St. Louis to buy one. Then, that same week, I heard a radio ad for Scooter World and gave them a call. They had a few Bajaj's in and I was immediately impressed by their size. I stopped in the shop a few more times, then ordered my bike.
About a month after I ordered mine, the Stella's came out. When my bike came in I did have a little buyer's remorse, but after a year or so on the Bajaj, it all disappeared. I was able to snag a P200 later and now I have both, but I ride the Bajaj more because of the suspension. It feels more stable to me than the P.
Ultimately, I love both of them.

yea, i gotta' go along with the suspension. i've been riding Vespas for along time... i actually test rode a Stella first, it felt just like P series... but new(and the last time i had been on a new P was in '87)so i was in love!!! then Mike suggested a ride on the Bajaj... i rolled back into the parking lot and said: "sold. ...how much is it?" i came back a week later (w/down payment and great financing)and rode it home... i totally forgot about my short love affair with that stella... i can't even remember her name... sigh.
the way the Bajaj handles and it's "in-city" performance definitely sold me... the anti-dive front suspension the beefy rear shock the tractor ruggedness...
about a year later i ended up buying a Stella... i traded it. and still ride the Bajaj!
*actually i traded the Bajaj too, but it was for a "66 "blue badge"!!! who could blame me?!? and less than a month later got the Bajaj back!!!

Gotta get in on this one... was looking for a "second car" that would allow me to keep my commute on 2 wheels (used to ride my bicycle everywhere). I started looking at 50cc scoots, but quickly decided that if I was going to spend the dough I might as well be able to actually ride *on* the road. I was on a budget, so it needed to be cheap to get and to keep on the road. Oh yeah, and I'm an mpg freak, and I prefer to ride and drive manual shifters, so although I considered the Buddy, the Bajaj won out handily. An added bonus is that it gives me an outlet for my "wrinching" urges, as they say. This was the first vehicle that I've really done most of my own work on, and it feels really good! Oh yeah, and this board... I didn't discover it 'till later, but now I can't get through the day without checking in to see what pearls of wisdom have been posted. Kudos to us!
